The Liver is the largest
gland and one of most complex organ. Thousands of
Indians are suffering due to the hundreds of liver
diseases. And about 3,00,000 patients are dying annually
due to same. The Chennai Liver Foundation is now starting the
fight against liver disease to help people who lost the
hope of life.
Vision The cause of liver
disease is manyfold. Viral infection, congenital
diseases, certain toxins and infantile malnutrition
causing what is called Indian childhood
cirrhosis. All result in liver failure
ultimately. Many patients die of acute liver failure due
to viral infections, drug toxicity and other causes. All
the chronically ill patients develop many complications
such as bleeding from gastro intestinal tract,
collection of fluid in the abdomen (Ascites) &
Nutrtional deficiencies; frequently requiring hospital
admissions. This not only incurs heavy expenditure but
cripples the patient till death.Majority of the diseases
affect the poor people for no fault of theirs. Even
before the end of stage liver failure occurs, their
earning capacity is reduced causing economic strain on
the family. All these patients can be saved only by
liver transplantation.In Western countries theses
procedure are done routinely for the last three decades
succesfully. In India, became legal by law known as
Organ Transplantation Act 1994. In Western countries the
cost of single liver transplantation is about $
2,50,000. From India very few patients travel abroad for
liver transplantation spending so much of money. If the
same is done here, it would cost the patient only around
$ 12,000 ( i.e. Rs.5,00,000). But many patients cannot
afford even this amount in our country.
