Why CLF

Liver is the largest gland and one of the most complex organ,  located in the upper right portion of the abdomen. It is a nutritional factory in the human body assimilating and supplying all the nutrients to all the tissues in the body. Hence if the liver is diseased the nutrition of all cells in the body will be affected. Liver is commonly affected by malnutrition, viral infections, alcohol abuse and rarely by tumors and congenital disease. As the disease progresses, the liver gradually looses its function and the patients succumb to the disease. There is no supporting system for liver as the dialysis facility for kidney.

Mission statement:  CLF is committed to help the patients with end stage liver disease by providing drugs , pleasant hospitality , nutritional support and financial support for liver transplantation. It is also aims to educate the public about causes of liver diseases and ways to prevent them.

Founder

Dr.R.P.Shanmugam M.S.,M.N.A.M.S.,M.ch., the founder had training in Liver transplantation at Kings College Hospital, London and at Universtiy of Tokyo, Japan. He has done the first successful liver Transplantation at Govt. Stanley Hospital in 1996 itself, It was third in India , but first in a Government Hospital. He was also a part of the team which performed the first liver transplant in India at Apollo Hospital, Chennai.

The first liver transplantation : For years, Government Hospitals have evinced little emotion from the public, except scorn and an endless list of complaints- meagre funds, poor facilities etc. But 42 years old Selvaraj, had undergone a liver transplant which was successfully conducted by the Chief of Surgical Gastro-enterology Dr.R.P.Shanmugam at Stanley Medical College Hospital along with his team-mates.Credit

goes to a widowed mother, Thangam, hailing from a very poor family, lost her son Ravichandran from a motor-cycle-lorry collision, gave consent for a multi- organ transplant in the hope that her son would continue existing in the frames of other people. Despite tremendous odds, a dedicated team at the Stanley Medical College Hospital in Madras has carried out a successful Liver Transplant which is the Third Liver Transplant in India. In the final analysis, the successful transplant at the SMC Hospital shows that it is more than just a milestone in the Indian History. Selvaraj, died due to Cardiac complication but he was the longest surviving Liver Transplant patient then .

The features

Liver Transplant & Gastroenrtology : More than 3 lakhs of people die of irreversible liver disease every year in India. When all the treatments fail for endstage liver disease the only treatment now available is liver transplantation. It is a well established procedure in western countries. The liver is taken from BRAIN DEAD Cadavers. The other method is, taking out part of the liver from a living person and transplanting to the needy, mainly children. The cost of the treatment abroad will be amount 2,50,000 U.S. Dollars (Rs. One Crore). If the same is done in india, it will cost a patient about Rs. 6 lakhs. Many cannot afford this much, even though it costs much less in our country. Therefore, a trust has been founded by the name" CHENNAI LIVER FOUNDATION (CLF)".

Organ Donation : The Organ Transplant Act provide guidelines explaining how you may donate specific organs, tissue, or even your entire body.Generally, any individual who has mental capacity and is at least 18 years old may arrange to give away all or part of his or her body.A donation cannot be made until all efforts have been exhausted to save your life, and for most organ donations (other than eyes) a doctor must also determine that you no longer have brain activity. Then, most hospitals are required to get the permission from your next of kin-even if you have signified your desire to donate on your driver's license or on a donor card.

If you did not specifically state a wish to donate an organ, a gift can be authorized by your family, a legal guardian(if you are still alive), or by the person in charge of disposing of your body after death. However, if you specifically stated a wish not to donate an organ, neither your family or anyone else can override that wish. In fact, health care institutions generally are forbidden to accept an organ if it has been informed that the deceased did not wish for the anatomical gift to be made.

If you want to donate your entire body, you generally should contact a medical school in advance of your death to make arrangements.

Research and Training : This is also part of the functions of the CLF to carryout more research on local prevailing conditions and on indigenous drugs.Training of medical and paramedical personnel is another aspect. Educating the public about causes, prevention of liver diseases highlighting the ill effects of alcohol and organising vaccination camps for prevention of Hepatitis-B virus etc.

Association : We appeal to every one to contribute generously to achieve our goal of preventing and curing the dreadful liver diseases and to establish liver transplantation the first of its kind in India. You can be one among us who are interested to contribute for the success of CLF, which will ultimately help us to reduce the incidence and impact of all liver diseases.

Donations are exempted from Income tax under section 80 G if Income tax Act 1961.
